Cervical Cancer Screening with HPV DNA Testing
Cervical cancer is a disease that occurs when malignant cells grow uncontrollably in the cervix. Cervical cancer in women is caused by infection with high-risk Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), especially types 16 and 18. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is common in women of reproductive age.
Cervical cancer can develop over a period of 10-20 years. Symptoms experienced include bleeding or spots from the vagina, chronic vaginal discharge smelling and mixed with blood, bleeding outside the menstrual period, heavier than usual menstrual periods, and bleeding during sexual intercourse. In the early stages, symptoms of cervical cancer are often vague or even absent. Because of this, many women are ignorant of the symptoms of cervical cancer. Delay in diagnosis causes the death rate from cervical cancer to be very high. For this reason, it is necessary to screen so that there is no delay in diagnosis through HPV DNA examination.
HPV DNA screening is an examination to detect high-risk type Human Papillomavirus (HPV) virus infections in women. It involves taking a sample of cells from the cervix for laboratory examination.
HPV DNA screening is important because:
Ø HPV infection does not always cause symptoms or signs, so patients do not know they are infected.
Ø Long-term infection with certain types of HPV can lead to cervical cancer.
Ø Early detection of cervical cancer is critical to increase the chances of effective treatment.
